How It All Began
Mr D’s journey into the world of hairstyling began in 1987 when he completed his hairdressing course. However, after working in a telecommunication company for several years, he decided to pursue his passion and opened his own barbershop in 2006. By 2010, a growing number of families with autistic children began to frequent his shop, recognising Mr D’s unique ability to connect with their children. What started as a regular barbershop quickly transformed into a specialised service for children with autism.

Inspired by His Autistic Sister
Mr D’s exceptional skill in working with autistic children comes from a deeply personal experience. Growing up with an autistic sister, he learned the importance of patience, understanding, and compassion. Caring for her taught him how to navigate the challenges that come with autism, and these lessons have become a cornerstone of his approach in the salon. Mr D understands that each child is different, and he makes it a point to consult with parents before every haircut to understand their child's preferences and needs.

"I’ve learned that the key to connecting with autistic children is patience," he says. "I don’t mind if I get kicked or pulled at. I tell parents not to apologise. I love these kids, and every day, I pray for God to send me more 'anak syurga' (children from heaven). It brings me joy to serve them."

A Fun and Relaxing Environment for Children

The walls are brightly coloured, decorated with cheerful themes, and filled with toys and playful elements to make children feel comfortable and excited. One of the studio’s highlights is the ‘car’ seats where children can sit during their haircut, turning what could be a stressful experience into a fun one.

A Family Legacy of Care
Mr D’s commitment to his work is also shared by his family. His eldest son, Silvarajah, is a key part of the team at the studio and has learned how to care for autistic children under his father’s guidance. Silvarajah fondly remembers one memorable experience when he was trying to calm a young child during a haircut. After discovering that the child loved playing with water, he handed him a spray bottle. While the haircut ended up being a wet affair, the child was happy, and the haircut was a success. It was a small but significant triumph that filled him with joy.

Mr D’s Future Vision
Looking ahead, Mr D has big plans for the future. He hopes to expand his hair studio and create a dedicated space specifically designed for children with autism—an environment where they can move freely, feel at ease, and truly be themselves. Until then, Mr D continues to welcome children of all ages and abilities, providing a caring, comfortable, and joyful experience for every customer.
